That was not bad for a four-year-old boy.

On May 3, he set his lemonade stand outside a supermarket. His lemonade stand was an attractive sight there. The stand helped to keep customers cool when they went shopping. \"Although he is ill, Jack is determined to make lemonade and work at his lemonade stand for a period of time every year to help his friends at Sick Kids,\" his mother said with a proud look.

Mrs Hollingsworth, my third grade teacher, gave me and the other students some writing homework last week —— writing an article about potatoes.

I had to go to our school's library and do some research. What I found out made this article much easier to write. I found out that the potato has been around for a long time. It started out in South America. Then, Spanish explorers brought it to Europe. Later, the Europeans brought it to the United States. Today over 100 countries grow potatoes. Some people eat almost nothing but potatoes. You might not know that China grows more potatoes than any other place.

After I found out these basic facts, I kept reading to make sure I had enough other facts to make a good article. An interesting thing that happens to potatoes is that they grow eyes! The eyes are not like those of humans. The eyes are really little potato sprouts (芽). To make a new potato, first cut off the bottom part of the potato. Then, stick some toothpicks (牙签) into the sides and put it in a cup of water. Make sure one of the potato eyes is under water. (The toothpicks keep it from falling into the water.) The potato eye will take root, using the water to feed itself. Then, you can plant the potato, and maybe six months later you'd be able to dig up a big potato and eat it. ( ) 51. Why did the writer write about the potato? A. It was easy to write about. B. It was the writing homework. C. It is a good fried vegetable. D. It is a very popular vegetable.

( ) 52. Who brought the potato to the United States? A. Asian people. B. American people. C. European people. D. South American people.

( ) 53. What is the first step when people grow a potato from another potato? A. Planting it in the ground. B. Placing it in a cup of water.

C. Cutting off the bottom part of the potato.

D. Putting toothpicks in the sides of the potato.

( ) . Which of the following is TRUE?

A. China grows more potatoes than any other place. B. Potatoes started out in China. C. Potatoes have the same eyes as people.

D. The teacher asked the writer to watch a movie about potatoes. ( ) 55. The writer wrote the passage to _________. A. teach us how to plant potatoes B. tell some facts about potatoes C. encourage us to eat more potatoes D. tell us the history of planting potatoes
